In the early 1900's, the lush rolling foothill expanse of Mt. Diablo became known as Blackhawk Ranch, where prized thoroughbreds graced the land for decades. Established in 1917 by San Francisco capitalist Ansel Easton, the ranch was used first as a summer home and later as a working ranch. The ranch gained a worldwide reputation for purebred Shorthorn cattle and prize Shire horses. Years later, this natural splendor inspired a vision of luxury living and a new Blackhawk was born. Prestigious Blackhawk Country Club, located just east of the town of Danville, is a self-contained unincorporated entity of its own. Blackhawk was the brain-child of real estate developer Ken Behring (former owner of the Seattle Seahawks NFL team) in the late 1970's. To appreciate the magnitude of Ken's vision you have to see this place to believe it. Blackhawk is actually made up of 5 separate gated communities with nearly 5,000 homes. Each community has a slightly different feel, but all are spectacular in their own distinct way with amenities such as two 18 hole championship golf courses, ( the Lakeside and the Falls Golf courses) uncompromised landscapes and vistas through hills and valleys at the base of majestic Mt. Diablo. The country club section of Blackhawk is by far the largest of these communities with two 24-hour guard gates. Homes within the gates of the country club range from town homes to estates in excess of 30,000 square feet. Gorgeous tree-lined streets, country estates and executive estates are everywhere and seem to exude a feel of another era. This is a community fit for a King or Queen! Blackhawk is truly called home by many of the Bay Area's "captains of industry", professional athletes and area entrepeneurs for the discerning homeowners who prize the anonymity this area affords them. Excellent shopping, dining, museums and services are at the edge of the development in the form of the spectacularly architected Blackhawk Plaza as well as the myriad of options in nearby Danville, San Ramon and Alamo. This the the quintessential community for the uncompromising family! The nationally awarded and highly ranked San Ramon Valley Unified School District provides elementary, middle and high school education to the community. Achievement test scores consistently rank in the top percentiles among California schools. Blackhawk is located just east of Danville. Charming downtown Danville sports many restaurants, cafes, art galleries and specialty shops along its quaint main street. On weekends, the main street is sometimes closed for art and crafts fairs. There is also a Farmer's market much of the year just off the Iron Horse Trail, which is popular for jogging, biking, rollerblading and for some horseback riding. Go next door to the Farme's Market and soak-up some of the history of the valley at the San Ramon Valley Historical Museum! Danville is also famous for its family-friendly 4th of July parade and celebration featuring everything from local girl-scout troops to military veterans. The cultural offerings of the town include: theater, jazz, symphony concerts and art and photo exhibits. And finally, at the holiday season, thousands stroll with lighted candles to a large heritage oak tree in the downtown for a tree-lighting ceremony. These and many more activities make Blackhawk and Danville a great place to live! |
